Lady Margaret Douglas was the daughter of David Douglas, 7th Earl of Angus and Margaret Hamilton. She married by contract, firstly, Sir Walter Scott, 4th of Buccleuch, son of Sir William Scott of Kirkurd and Buccleuch, younger and Grizel Bethune, on 19 June 1568. She married, secondly, Francis Stewart, 1st and last Earl of Bothwell, son of John Stewart, 1st Lord Darnley and Lady Jean Hepburn, before 1 July 1592. She died in 1640. She was buried at Eckford, England.
From after 19 June 1568, her married name became Scott. From before 1 July 1592, her married name became Stewart.

Francis Stewart, 1st and last Earl of Bothwell was born circa 1563. He was the son of John Stewart, 1st Lord Darnley and Lady Jean Hepburn. He married Lady Margaret Douglas, daughter of David Douglas, 7th Earl of Angus and Margaret Hamilton, before 1 July 1592. He died on 4 November 1613, died in exile.
Francis Stewart, 1st and last Earl of Bothwell also went by the nick-name of 'Wizard Earl'. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Darnley circa November 1563. He was created 1st Lord Hailes on 16 June 1581. He was created 1st Earl of Bothwell on 16 June 1581. He held the office of Lord High Admiral between 1583 and 1591. He was a commissioner to treat with England in 1586. He held the office of Governor of the Realm in 1589, jointly. On 2 June 1591 he was imprisoned after being accused of witchcraft. On 22 June 1591 he escaped. On 25 June 1591 he was forfeited. On 27 December 1591 he attempted to seize the King at Holyrood.1 On 17 July 1593 he again attempted to seize the King at Falkland.1 On 21 July 1593 he was attainted by Act of Parliament. On 3 April 1594 he appeared with 500 horse, achieved nothing, and then fled to England, and on to France, Spain and Italy.
