Sir John Gordon, 1st Bt. was born in 1610. He was the son of George Gordon and Margaret Bannerman. He married Mary Forbes, daughter of William Forbes, in 1630. He died on 19 July 1644, beheaded after being found guilty of treason (the first Royalist to be executed by a judicial sentence). Sir John Gordon, 1st Bt. was next in command of the Royal forces to oppose the Covenanters. He fought in the action at Turreff in 1639. He was created 1st Baronet Gordon, of Haddo, co. Aberdeen on 13 August 1642. In October 1643 he protested against the Covenant. On 8 May 1644 in Kelly, Devon, England, his house was beseiged and he was taken prisoner on its surrender.
