| Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore was born on 21 July 1824 in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis and Charlotte Grimstead. He married Frances Dora Smith, daughter of Oswald Smith and Henrietta Mildred Hodgson, on 28 September 1853. He died on 16 February 1904 at age 79 in Bordighera, Italy. He was buried on 24 February 1904. Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore gained the title of 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
